Hands off my giant remote!

Pop Candy recommended an awesome tv-related present today, Jumbo Universal Remote from Journey’s Edge.

Check out how awesome it looks:

If anyone wants to get TV Revival a present, I’ll go on record saying fancy tv remotes are completely acceptable.

Hey Now!

All that talk about my Arrested Development love and excitement yesterday led me to an inadvertent game of “One Degree of Jeffrey Tambor,” and the subject of today’s post: The Larry Sanders Show.

Larry remains one of HBO’s best original series of all time to this day, even though it ended ten years ago. It sticks in the communal craw of us Larry fans that the complete series isn’t available on DVD yet, but the two DVD sets they relased last year, The Complete First Season and the irritatingly incomplete Not Just the Best of the Larry Sanders Show, are better than nothing.

I’ve worked a couple of jobs in late night television, so this series has an especially special place in my heart, and friends might find me laughing a little too hard at some of the jokes. Plus, there are loads of funny celebrity cameos, with one of the best pictured above.

Anyway, somehow I never got around to buying those DVDs when they were first released, so at least now I know what I’m asking for this xmas!

TV Revival Gets Off on Being Withholding

But, not when there is BIG NEWS. The fabled Arrested Development movie is officially happening! Officially. Jeffrey Tambor said. So there.

In case you didn’t know, AD is only the best show ever that is not The Wire, so this is huge. Sadly, both shows are now off the air. Much less sadly, I have both series on DVD.

Typically, my initial reaction upon hearing that [insert TV show] is being turned into a movie is to nurture unreasonable confidence that the movie version will definitely suck. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut proved that this is not always the case, and handily. In fact, it proved that sometimes the movie version of a beloved show can become a real classic. (Note: This does not apply to The Simpsons Movie.)

Besides, Mitch Hurwitz’s brilliance is enough for me to already be excited about the prospect of the movie that is finally really, really happening. So, considering the amazing cast (Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Jason Bateman, David Cross, Tony Hale, Jeffrey Tambor and also okayfineyougetthepoint), it’s statistically impossible for the AD movie to suck. Impossible, I say!

Are You Having a Laugh?

If you’ve been paying attention (and why would you be?), you know by now that I lurve stand-up comedy. While stand-up on teevee can never compare to seeing a brilliant comic at a live show, there are some classic stand-up specials from the likes of Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, George Carlin, Chris Rock and others, that many of us peasants would never have seen if it weren’t for TV. Tonight, Ricky Gervais is trying his hand at joining that esteemed echelon of televised hilarity.

Gervais has already proven his mettle in the sitcom format, with the original The Office and later, Extras. Apparently, he’s new to doing actual stand-up comedy, so I guess he’s taken the “go big or go home” approach, by beginning his foray with an HBO special that was taped at Madison Square Garden. That’s one way to go.

The teasers for the special that I have seen look pretty effing funny, but that is what they’re meant to do. Still, I’m pretty excited for the special tonight, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to not suck. Check out Ricky’s special, Out of England: The Stand Up Special tonight at 9p eastern and 10p pacific on HBO. You already know I will be, and therefore that makes it cool.

It’s so hard to say goodbye

No more David Tennant on “Doctor Who”…can I just go cry in the corner?

David Tennant as the Doctor

His portrayal of the Doctor finally made me give the series a chance. How can I go on with out him! I feared that he would be leaving at the end of season four, but when he regenerated without changing his face I felt relieved that he would be staying on the show. Wrong! They just pushed the changover to the Christmas special to coincide with the showrunner changeover from Russell T. Davies to Steven Moffat.

I can’t even fathom a new actor taking his place that can keep up that level of charisma and good looks…*sob*

Make your own Muppet!

I’m a huge Jim Henson fan, especially his breakout television program “The Muppet Show”. The puppet variety show began in 1976 and ran for five years with a total of 120 episodes! My top 3 favorite muppet characters are Animal, Kermit the Frog, and the old man duo - Statler and Waldorf.

The Muppet Show - created by Jim Henson

Can’t pick a favorite muppet? I know it’s hard. If you or someone you know (like me!!) is a huge fan of Jim Henson and/or “The Muppet Show”, you should give them their own personalized muppet for the holidays.

What? How can this be you ask? FAO Schwartz has opened up a Muppet Whatnot Workshop! For $90-130 bucks you can design your own muppet doll and have it delivered to you in just a few weeks! If you prefer dvds to dolls, the tv seasons are available on dvd today.

We Pooped at Television Revival Today

“The Sarah Silverman Program” is back on Comedy Central, and the second season is off to a strong start. I’m hoping more poop songs will abound as the season progresses.

The show seems to already have hit its stride in the latest installment, entitled “High, It’s Sarah.” As you may have guessed, this episode is all about “Sarah” (played by Sarah Silverman) getting really, really stoned with “Brian” (played by Brian Posehn). I wonder if these two did any research for their roles. Sounds like a real stretch for them both.

Of course, in the reality– if you can call it that– of this series, way more ridiculous and funny consequences follow than would ever happen to any of us real people after too many bong rips. If only life had writers, no weed laws, and occasional cameos from Eddie Peppitone. If you missed this when it aired a couple of weeks ago, try to catch a rerun of it or the other two episodes that have aired since then. Com Central is pretty decent about second chances. And third, fourth and fifth chances, for that matter.

Technically, this is the second half of the second season that is airing right now. I know this because I just checked to make sure the first season is available on DVD, only to discover that both the first season and “Season Two, Vol. 1″ are available, which is news to me. It’s now about to become news to my credit card company, because I’m off to buy them both. Toodles!

TV Halloween Costume Ideas

The hilarious Halloween costume idea thread on Pajiba, got me thinking about what I should dress up as this year. Here’s the television show related costumes I’ve come up with so far:

“Doctor Who”

The Doctor is just a blue suit and converse sneakers, easy as pie! Or if you’re a girl, you could be Martha, Donna or Rose. All you have to do is track down their specific outfits, which isn’t too hard since they typically wear one get-up all season long.

“Smallville”
Buy the archetypical Superman costume or wear casual clothes with a superman shirt underneath to be young Clark Kent.

“The Office”
Basically wear your office/work clothes and pair it with a Dundler-mifflin mug, nametag or pen to give people a hint.

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”
Cheerleader Costume
Dress up like a cheerleader or late-nineties teenager. Then, pair your outfit with a wooden stake and fake blood splatter.

“Dexter” or “CSI”
Michael C. Hall as Dexter
Clear plastic coveralls splattered with fake blood, lab goggles, and fake scalpel if you go for the “Dexter” angle. For “CSI”, get any old cover-alls or jumpsuit and put label on the backing saying “CSI” + CITY NAME (depends on which incarnation you prefer of the CBS franchise).

Bart Simpson Mask
Or you can get a cheap costume mask and go as a “Simpsons” character.

The HDTV price dilemma

I’m too young to remember actual tv prices of old, but they surely have to be less than they are now. The prices for lcd tvs today are astronomical! It boggles my mind that television prices (and cable service too) have appeared to double in a blink of an eye. Yeah I’m probably one of the biggest television addict’s you’ll ever meet (we’re talking 8-10 hours a day if I didn’t have to work), but the idea of dropping 2k on a piece of technology still irks me.

Samsung Series 6 LN-52A650 52

I know that it’s a luxury investment, one can live without a Samsung Series 6 LCD TV. But with every tv show being broadcast in HD, I feel the urge to buy an HDTV more than ever! Since the stock market is in the crapper, maybe they’ll be extra cheap this holiday season. Fingers crossed.
