Primeval on BBC DVD

BBC’s new show, “Primeval”,  can be a bit cheesy from time to time (especially with some of the special f/x). But after about episode 4, I really started to like the whole gang, even the flying lizard, Rex.

And the whole entering the anomaly can seriously f&*K with reality theme made me give the tv show a full season pass on my DVR. I think I like Jenny Lewis better than her Claudia Brown counterpart (both characters played by Lucy Brown). Claudia was too much of a pushover while Jenny is manipulative PR woman who gets the job done. Plus, Nick Cutter’s character has better motivation now that his relationship with Claudia cannot move forward (i.e. because she no longer exists). The show needs him to be a tortured soul, sort of man on a quest who has nothing to live for but to discover the truth behind the anomalies.

Missed out on Primeval series 1 and 2? No worries. BBC releases their television dvd sets of their tv shows in a more timely fashion than most networks. Both series are available in one box set for around $34.99 on November 4th (i.e. tomorrow!).

Carnivàle! No, Not the Sexy One in Brazil.

“Dancing with the Stars” started this week, and I watched it for the first time. I would never watch such a show in my real life, but I figure I ought to expose myself to new and terrible things. Hey, it’s in the interest of finding television blog fodder. Nevertheless, rather than unleash my tirade over everything wrong with that show today, I’d rather keep spirits high. It is a Friday, after all. So, I’ll save it for another day, allow the hate stew to simmer, and tell you about something I do like: Carnivàle.

I remember this show when it first began airing on HBO back in 2003, but it looked weird. Too weird. So, I never bothered trying to get into it; plus, the only person I knew who did watch it was an imbecile. Years later, a non-imbecile friend swore up and down that it was his favorite show, and I began to reconsider it.

Long story less long, I put the first disc of Season 1 at the top of my Netflix queue, and wound up watching the entire series within a two week span, slowed down only by the sluggish pace of the United States Postal Service.

It even got to the point where I would bring some of the discs to work to watch at my computer. Granted, I was trying to get fired, but that’s neither here nor there. The moral of the story is, Carnivàle is indeed weird, but it’s a good weird, not “John from Cinncinnati” weird.

The show only lasted two seasons because it was too expensive to produce, considering it wasn’t getting “Sopranos” ratings. But, it is certainly one of the most unique shows I’ve seen, above all, and I watch loads of television. Even if you don’t love it as much as, say “The Wire” (and who could?), it’s worth a look. So, check it out. Go. Go do it now.

Samurai Champloo

After “Cowboy Bebop”, Shinichirō Watanabe next television series was “Samurai Champloo”. The 26 episodes focused on the misadventures of an unlikely trio: Mugen, the hilarious theif, Jin, the restrained samurai, and the feisty young girl, Fuu. They unite after Fuu rescues Mugen and Jin from execution and she demands they help her find the samurai who smells of sunflowers as her reward.

Mugen, Jin, and Fuu of 'Samurai Champloo'

I saw the Japanese series when it debuted in America in 2005 on Adult Swim. The tone of the series fluctuated between comedy and action, much like “Cowboy Bebop”. However, this time around we get to see the world of the samurai, if said samurai was into hip-hop and likes to get funky all the time.

Check the opening credit sequence below:

If that wets your whistle, buy the “Samurai Champloo” dvds today.

Bionic Women

When Lindsay Wagner hit the (then) little screen back in the 1970s with “The Bionic Woman”, she gave a whole new meaning to the term “bi.” The series was an instant hit and its title became a brand name. So it was somewhat inevitable we would one day have a sequel. And like so many recycled TV series, this one is no big deal. But then I’d have to think a long and hard—or have a bionic brain–before I could come up with any re-make that is better or even as good as the original.

Bionic Women

Michelle Ryan
is okay as Jamie Sommers in the new version, but she plays a supporting role. The special effects take the lead. If you’re 16, you won’t be bored. Otherwise, the overdose of gratuitous action sequences may not be enough to keep you from dozing ff in your vintage Lazy Boy. You have to care about the characters to give a damn if they survive their near death experiences. Iron Man does a better job at characterization.

Dark Angel

Before Jessica Alba was in big budget movies like The Love Guru, she starred in James Cameron’s “Dark Angel”, a sci-fi action television series on Fox.

Cast of James' Cameron's

During the two seasons of the show, Max Guevera (Alba) was a bike messenger by day and rogue special agent by night. The tv show was set in a near future post-apocalyptic America where Alba’s character was engineered by the government to be a super soldier that had cat dna enhancements. One minute her character would be delivering a package, and the next she’d be fighting off agents with her super strength and flexibility. All the while never losing track of any of her bike gear and important packages.

She had an on and off again relationship with Logan (Michael Wetherly), a sometimes wheelchair ridden political activist. Together, they would fight to take down the militaristic post-apocalyptic government that loves to experiment on humans and then throw them to the wind. Jensen Ackles (CW’s “Supernatural) played Alec, a selfish rogue agent who helped out Max only when it was profitable. I enjoyed his character way more than Logan’s or Max’s, especially in the second season, when he brought some much needed comic relief to this heavy sci-fi melodrama.

Ultimately, the show ended with a giant cliffhanger where Max was supposedly the messiah that would rescue the world from its post-apocalyptic condition. Unfortunately, James Cameron never got to flesh out that character development, since Fox decided not to renew the show in 2002 for a third season.

Primeval: Dinotastic Adventures on BBC

BBC America is finally premiering their sci-fi/action-adventure television series, “Primeval”, this Saturday at 9pm.

Primeval

I watched an episode when I visited London and first thought I’d stumbled upon a strange episode of “Land of the Lost”. The place I stayed at had one of those Sky One tuners and a weird HDTV rear projection set ups (so many cords, I tell you!), so navigating the channels was a bit challenging. As such, I just left the channel as is and went along for the ride. Little did I know, I was watching the next sci-fi show that BBC America would be promoting here in the states!

“Primeval” tells the story of scientist, Nick Cutter (Douglass Henshall) who discovers a few dinosaurs walking around alive and well in present day. Apparently some crazy space-time rift is wreaking havoc (enter the sci-fi angle) and creatures from various periods and places start popping up.

From BBC America:
“Cutter, his research assistant Stephen Hart, zoologist Abby Maitland, and student paleontologist Connor Temple race to understand what’s happening, while government bureaucrats James Lester and Claudia Brown insist they have to keep the danger secret from the public. As the past threatens to invade the present and destroy the future, Cutter’s crew faces a life-and-death race against time.”

Sounds fun, right? I’m giving it a shot since it’s still summer and the lastest season “Doctor Who” just ended. Gotta fill the void somehow.

Shirley Manson acting debut

Shirley Manson, lead singer of the band Garbage, joins the cast of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”.

Shirley Manson

From SciFi Wire:
“Manson turns up as Catherine Weaver, the chief executive of Cyberdine Systems, which all Terminator fans know develops the computers that eventually become Skynet. “She’s the CEO of a corporation that develops certain technologies,” Manson said. “And she’s very self-empowered, successful, self-assured, singular. So it’s a cool character to play.” (She added that producers will let her keep her Scottish brogue.)”

Pop culture confession: I own all four Garbage albums ( I have this strange loyalty to the band after seeing them open up for Smashing Pumpkins in ‘97). Thus, maybe that makes me a little biased and overly positive about this casting news. Nevertheless, watching Shirley Manson make her television debut has finally given me a reason to be pumped for the second season of “Terminator”.

Shirley Manson definitely has a strong stage presence, so it’s probably not that big of a leap for her to become an actress. I’m just surprised that Fox being so cool with it, especially since she has no acting training per se. It’s sorta risky to have a newbie play such a pivotal character as Catherine Weaver in the series. What are they gonna do? fire

“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” returns September 8th at 8/7c. Buy the first season of “Terminator” dvd on August 19th.

Chuck & Hellboy discuss lunch boxes

Just yesterday, I was trying to convince my friend to give “Chuck” a chance when it returns this fall. I couldn’t believe he hadn’t watched it, esp since it’s produced by the creator of “The OC”, a show my friend desperately tried to get me to watch. My friend said he just hadn’t made it around to it. Thus, I proceeded to give him a brief overview of why he should.

Cast of

I described “Chuck” as a geekier, more tongue-in-cheek version of “Alias” meets “30 Rock”. Chuck (Zachary Levi) works at the Buy More as the leader of the computer repair department, Nerd Herd. He’s the typical geek slacker, living with his sister, playing video games and discussing the merits of Metal Gear Solid with his best friend Morgan.

Then, one day, he accidently has all the top secrets of the C.I.A. downloaded into his head and he’s forced into working for the government. He’s protected by Sarah, his potential love interest and friend, and Casey (Adam Baldwin) , the hard nose agent who would kill Chuck on the spot if the order came down.

The best part of the show is def not the stupid love triangle or the spy stuff. It’s all about the comic performances at the Buy More. Casey works there to keep a closer eye on Chuck, so seeing a spy forced to work retail is quite hilarious. But really it’s the Nerd Herd and other Buy More characters that keep me laughing and coming back for more.

I wouldn’t go far as to say it’s one the best comedies out there, but it’s certainly entertaining and worth space on my dvr.

And I love that these Hellboy II viral videos gave me a legitimate reason to discuss the awesomeness of “Chuck” on this here blog.

“Chuck” returns to NBC on September 29th, 8/7c.

Summer Marathons and Premieres

In the summer, many channels schedule marathons and reruns to fill up those empty blocks. Holidays and warmer weather create significant drops in viewership, which leads to less advertising dollars. Thus, networks can be more creative with the schedule.

There is the new trend of showing smaller budgeted shows during the summer as mid-season or summer only programs. I’ve discovered quite a few gems during this so-called down period like “Burn Notice”, “Mad Men”, “Eureka”, “Weeds” and “In Plain Sight”. As you may have noticed, mostly cable network or premium channels can so freely funnel money into summer shows, since you have to pay to see those channels anyway.

Here’s a list of reruns, premieres and marathons for July:
“Burn Notice” - Season 2 premiere on July 10th, 10pm (mini marathon on July 3rd)
“Weeds” - Season 4 already up and running, Mondays on Showtime at 10pm
“Mad Men” - Season 1 marathon on July 20th at noon, Season 2 premiere on July 27th (Thanks Whitney for the heads up!)

“Eureka” - Season Premiere on July 29th, 9pm (watch reruns online here)
“Supernatural” - Season 3 encore, Thursdays at 9pm
“Rescue Me” minisodes started on Tuesdays on F/X, but you can catch them online as well at Crackle.com

Don’t waste the day away in your sofa hammock, stay cool and catch up on all that great tv you missed earlier in the year.
